What is the connection?

Recently I received a package from an Australian Company called Exotica Atheltica and it contained a quote that really got me thinking. It was “Womanhood is an Extreme Sport”

I couldn’t get the concept out of my mind and started to think about it more deeply.

When you think about all the things that make us women, from periods to menopause, being a Woman is like being in an Extreme Sport that you train and participate in your whole life.

What happens next ?

It really starts when you get your first period. Every month, 12 months a year for 40 years or more. Let’s stop and think about it for a moment…..it’s a lot of bloody periods. No pardoning that pun!

If you also develop a menstrual condition such as Endo, Adeno PCOS or any other related condition, then that just adds to the “load” each month.

Then there’s LIFE; School and all its ups and downs and the teenage years! Then possibly a tertiary education and/or work.

Also through these years relationships develop and that’s a whole subject matter on its own !

Life could then include marriage and one of the biggest challenges of all – parenthood (children don’t come with instruction manuals).

And there’s more…

Now don’t forget that monthly event. If you are one of the fortunate few not to have any issues, then it’s mainly inconvenient and logistics. However, if you are one of the 90% of the female population worldwide who experience period pain and/or chronic issues associated with Menstruation, then you are coping with all of life’s challenges while most probably being in extreme or chronic pain on a monthly basis or even longer.

I could throw in other issues such as break ups, money issues, family worries, but after reading this far you get the idea.

We women shoulder many issues in our lives as do men, with one large difference – we bleed every month and are usually in pain for days at a time, sometimes even for weeks at a time.

And to add another layer to that burden, society has dismissed periods and associated pain and conditions as “a normal part of life to be endured” for hundreds of years with no concessions. Until very recently so did the medical profession – some still do. Women’s Health is only very recently starting to get the attention it so desperately needs.

About that connection…

So back to the original analogy. Being a Woman is like participating in an Extreme Sport that seems to last a lifetime. However we have to keep going and with sport, people can give it up.

So be proud of what we women can achieve, put up with, and still live highly productive lives and contribute so much to society.

It is often said that “life” is a miracle, but without Women there’s no life. So which one is the miracle ?

Thank you to Exotic Athletica for the quote.
