Why am I feeling more anxious?

Australia’s the lucky country right?  COVID-19 cases are smaller than anywhere in the world. We are protected by border closures. We have one of the best health systems in the world. Testing rates are high. So why am I feeling so anxious?

Are we totally safe? The second wave in Melbourne is unpredictable. Sydney is looming and there’s no vaccine yet, if at all.

First, the Prime Minister said six months; now he says we have an “early mark”. The curve has flattened and, putting Melbourne and Sydney to one side, there’s no new cases in most states of Australia and New Zealand. Globally, most countries are doing well. Putting out second wave spot fires with new cases, but generally under control, or is it? 

This roll-a-coaster of media messaging, one minute there’s good news the next minute bad news. Is this why I feel more anxious?

Serenity in isolation

Isolation was difficult at first, but the realisation that we were all in it together brought a strength of solidarity. The sudden stop to the merry-go-round of life brought a serenity and peace to our isolation. We discovered a new norm. A cocooned existence. Safe and secure.

This ‘coming out’ (and maybe having to go back in) is new territory with all the uncertainty of moving to a new house or changing jobs.

Dietary causes of anxiety and panic attacks

Researchers have identified three significant dietary contributors to anxiety and panic attacks especially in women: serotonin deficiency, low vitamin B6 levels and low iron levels.

Why are women more likely to suffer from serotonin deficiency than men? There is evidence that female hormones interact with serotonin to cause anxiety symptoms which worsen during the premenstrual time, and around the time of menopause.

Anxiety relief – foods and supplements where do I start?

Dr Urma Naidoo from the Harvard Medical School outlines many foods that can help. She says, “A diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits is a healthier option than eating a lot of simple carbohydrates found in processed foods.When you eat is also important. Don’t skip meals. Doing so may result in drops in blood sugar that cause you to feel jittery, which may worsen underlying anxiety.”

When you feel particularly stressed and you know an anxiety attack is imminent, try to avoid certain foods. Unfortunately the comfort go-to’s of alcohol, caffeine and that sugar hit especially in a pastry or high-sugar chocolate bar can all heighten anxiety symptoms.

Staying active is important
